BERKELEY - The No. 11-ranked Cal women's tennis team defeated Arizona, 5-2, today in the final home match for five Golden Bear seniors at Hellman Tennis Center. The victory gives the Golden Bears a season sweep over the Wildcats -- Cal previously won the first meeting at Arizona, 6-1, on March 5.
With today's victory, Cal improves to 16-6 overall and 7-4 in Pac-10 play, while Arizona falls to 5-12 overall, 1-6 in the Pac-10. It was the third win in a row for the Golden Bears. 15 of Cal's 16 dual match victories this season have been by 5-2 scores or better.
In the showcase match of the day, Arizona's No. 17-ranked Dianne Hollands defeated Cal's No. 4-ranked senior Raquel Kops-Jones in singles competition, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. But the Bears won four of the other five singles matches and took two of the three doubles-matches to earn the team victory.
In doubles action, Cal's No. 14-ranked duo of Kops-Jones and Jieun Jacobs defeated Arizona's Dianne Hollands and Maja Mlakar, 8-5.
