Cal Men's Golf Ties for 12th at U.S. Intercollegiate

STANFORD, CALIF. - In a rain-shortened tournament, the Cal men's golf team finished tied for 12th out of 17 teams at the U.S. Intercollegiate, sponsored by The Maple Fund and played at the Stanford Golf Course (par 70, 6,742 yards). The Golden Bears shot a two-round team score of 609 (310, 299), tying with Pac-10 rival Washington State. Freshman George Gandranata was Cal's top finisher, tying for 23rd with a 148 (74, 74).

UCLA was declared the winner of the tournament as the two-round leader from Saturday with a score of 578. USC was second at 579 and the Stanford men's golf team took third with a 580. Cardinal Rob Grube took individual medalist honors with his two-round score of 135 which included a 54 in yesterday's afternoon round.

Cal's other participants in the U.S. Intercollegiate included sophomore Freddy Wolfe, who tied for 35th with a 150 (75-75); freshman Romain Payet, who tied for 63rd with a 155 (78-77); sophomore Michael Jensen, who tied for 71st with a 156 (83-73); and junior Michael Wilson, who tied for 87th with a 165 (83-82).

The Bears play next at the Pac-10 Championships, April 24-26, in Palm Desert, Calif.
