BERKELEY – Eight members of this past season’s California men’s crew program will compete at the 2014 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Varese, Italy from July 23-27.
The five-day competition will feature races in several events, including the single sculls, double sculls, quadruple sculls, pair, four, coxed four and eight.
Four Golden Bears will compete for the United States, including Spencer Hall, Justin Murphy, Cole Reiser and Jordan Vanderstoep. Hall, who rowed for the Bears in the varsity eight that placed third at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Championships in June, will serve as the five-seat in the eight at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships. Murphy, who was voted the Pac-12 Men’s Crew Newcomer of the Year and rowed in Cal’s freshman eight this past season, will stroke the four for the United States. Reiser and Vanderstoep, who rowed together in Cal’s second varsity eight that captured the IRA Championship in June, will make up the United States pair. Vanderstoep will be the stroke with Reiser rowing in the bow-seat.
Senior Louis Snelson and junior Aaron Wright will both row for Australia in the eight at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships. Snelson, who rowed for Cal in the varsity eight that placed third at the IRAs in June, will serve in the five-seat and Wright, who rowed in the IRA Champion third varsity eight for the Bears in June, will serve in the six-seat for Australia.
Junior Morgan Hellen, who rowed for Cal in the varsity eight that placed third at the IRAs in June, will represent Great Britain in the eight. He will serve in the five-seat for the Great Britain boat at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
Another member of Cal’s varsity eight that placed third at the IRAs in June, Niki Van Sprang, will serve as the stroke for the Netherlands in the eight.
