BUDAPEST, Hungary – Cal sophomore Dora Antal had a game-high three goals to lead Hungary to an 11-7 win over Russia in the quarterfinals of the 2014 European Championships on Tuesday.

The win sets up a showdown of Cal student-athletes in Thursday’s semifinals when Antal and fellow Cal sophomore Anna Illes lead the Hungarians against Spain and another Cal sophomore, Roser Tarrago.

Antal scored two goals in the first half Tuesday to help Hungar build a 6-1 lead. Her final tally came in the fourth quarter after Russia had trimmed the deficit to 9-5. Antal scored one goal on a penalty shot, and also added two assists and a steal.

Illes once again was a key to Hungary’s defense. Hungary led 11-5 midway through the fourth period before Russia scored two late goals to close out the scoring.

Spain had a bye in the quarterfinals. Tarrago continues to lead the tournament with 14 goals and is third with eight steals. Antal’s eight goals is tied for fifth at the championships. She is tied for fourth with seven steals.

Antal was the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Year and a First Team All-American in 2014. Tarrago and Illes were All-American honorable mention.
