COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Golden Bears men’s gymnastics squad had a strong showing this weekend at the 2014 National Qualifier in Colorado Springs, Colo., qualifying one current Bear and a former Golden Bear to the P&G Championships in August over the weekend. Junior Kevin Wolting and volunteer assistant coach Steven Lacombe booked their tickets to Pittsburgh for the competition. They will join another former Bear, Donothan Bailey in the competition, after both Bailey and Lacombe competed at the World Championships last year.
"I am very proud of thier dedication and preparation for the US qualifier this year and the work is starting to pay off," Associate Head Coach Brett McClure said. "They have added difficulty since the NCAA's, so the confidence is not quite where it needs to be yet, but they are definitely on track to be well prepared for the nationals."
Wolting finished ninth overall with a total all-around score of 84.300, headlined by his 14.850 on vault and an impressive floor routine that earned him a score of 14.750 from the judges. Lacombe finished second overall on the still rings, when he posted a 15.200. He was just one tenth of a point shy of the event's winner, Brandon Wynn.
A total of 81 gymnasts competed at the 2014 National Qualifier. Donnell Whittenburg won the event when he scored an all-around mark of 87.950.
The P&G Championships are scheduled for August 21-24 and will be held in Pittsburgh, Pa. at the CONSOL Energy Center.
