WALTON-ON-THE-HILL, England – Pairings for 2014 Palmer Cup first-round foursome matches (alternate shot play) were announced Wednesday at the event’s opening ceremony at Walton Heath Golf Club. Former Golden Bear player Brandon Hagy is wrapping up his amateur career as a member of Team USA at the Ryder-Cup style amateur event pitting 10 American amateurs against 10 amateurs from Europe. Cal head coach Steve Desimone is serving as Team USA’s head coach

Hagy will participate along with fellow Team USA member Ollie Schniederjans against Paul Dunne (Ireland) and Grant Forrest (Scotland) in the first of five four-ball matches Thursday, getting underway at 7:30 a.m. local time (11:30 p.m. Wednesday night Pacific time).

“I’m extremely excited to be starting the Palmer cup tomorrow,” Hagy said. “I have put in a lot of hours and worked very hard over my collegiate career to get to this point and I am going to leave it all on the course. The British Amateur Championship was great preparation for this week as I am more adjusted to this style of play over in the UK. You have to think your way around the course and coach Desimone and the rest of the team have a good game plan.  This is my last completion as a player under Coach Desimone as well and I know we are both going to enjoy every moment. Go Bears and go USA!”

Afternoon four-ball matches (best ball play) are also scheduled for Thursday at 1:30 p.m. local time. There will be 10 match-play singles matches on both Saturday and Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. local time each day. All pairings other than the five announced four-ball matches are to be determined.

Each time a match is won the winning team receives a single point or a half point if the match is split with the Palmer Cup champion the team with the most points at the conclusion of three days of play. If the team total is tied at the completion of three days of competition the previous years’ winner will retain the cup, which in 2013 was Team USA.

Hagy is the fifth Cal player to participate in the Palmer Cup, joining former Cal golfers Michael Kim, Joël Stalter and Michael Weaver in 2013, and Peter Tomasulo in 2003. All but Stalter were on winning Team USA squads that have helped stake the Americans to a 9-7-1 advantage in the first 17 editions of the event that began in 1997.

Desimone is the first member of the Cal coaching staff to serve as a head coach in the event and the second to have coached in the Palmer Cup. Current associate head coach Walter Chun an assistant coach for Team USA in 2009.
