SANTA CLARA – In a display of the strength of the Cal swimming program, former Golden Bear star Tom Shields and 22-time Olympic medalist Michael Phelps raced to a tie in the 100-meter butterfly, while Cal Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian topped Phelps in the 100-meter freestyle to highlight Friday’s action at the Arena Grand Prix at Santa Clara at the George F. Haines International Swim Center.
In his second swim of the session, Phelps surged over the final 50 meters to share the 100 fly first-place finish with Shields in 52.11 seconds. Former Stanford swimmer Eugene Godsoe was third in 53.11.
Earlier Friday evening, Adrian continued his strong season with a victory in a star-studded 100m free in 48.17, clear of Phelps in 48.80 and third place Conor Dwyer (49.76).
Shields competed at Cal from 2010-13, while Adrian swam for the Bears from 2007-11.
