BERKELEY - Cal right fielder Derek Campbell hit his sixth homer of the season, but No. 2-ranked Oregon State had jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Campbell's roundtripper and the Golden Bears fell to the Beavers, 10-4, Friday night at Evans Diamond.

Pac-12 leading OSU improved to 32-8 overall and 15-4 in league play, while Cal dropped to 19-22 and 7-12 in conference. The game was played in front of the biggest home crowd - 1,783 - of the season.

The Bears were plagued by errors and the strong pitching of Beaver left-hander Ben Wetzler, who improved his record to 8-1 by throwing 7.2 innings with five hits, one run, two walks and six strikeouts.

The losing pitcher for Cal was right-hander Daulton Jefferies, who went 6.1 innings with nine hits, six runs, four earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts.

After Campbell's seventh inning homer, OSU came back with a run in the eighth inning and three runs in the top of the ninth. The Bears mustered three runs in the bottom of the ninth when freshman left fielder Aaron Knapp had an RBI single and sophomore Max Dutton had a two-run double to right field.

Campbell, who also had a double in the fourth inning, and sophomore center fielder Devin Pearson, finished with two hits apiece.

The Beaver and the Bears will play the second game of the three game series, Saturday, May 3 at 6 p.m. at Evans Diamond.
