Another season comes to a close. This might be the type of season that some want to forget but I know I won’t. I can’t. This type of season is humbling as a coach. So much of what we do every day is positioning our team to win games. You try and do everything you can to scratch out a win, and the reality is there’s only so much you can do sometimes. “All you can do, is all you can do.”

When the wins aren’t there, it forces you to think beyond wins and losses. Seasons like this force you to think outside the box and try new things, which is great growth for a coach. When you operate from a position of “nothing to lose” sometimes you find that you gain more than you could have anticipated. It also forces you to remember why you make the sacrifices you do and to value the small victories that sometimes get lost in more successful seasons. There were many small victories this season that shouldn’t be understated.

Victories like incredible team cohesion that will be a foundation for this team moving forward. Victories like more experience and playing time for everyone. The simple victory of not taking a single win for granted. Sometimes the silver lining is simply that you’re tougher, stronger and still kicking for another crack next season. I know our players evolved as people, and hopefully they can draw off this season next year or in the real world for our seniors.

This season tested us all. I’m proud of the way we hung in there all season and the heart on this team in unquestionable. With many lessons learned along the way, we’re all better for it. Go Bears!
