Cal Falls to Stanford, 4-1

STANFORD, CALIF. – Stanford’s Tommy Edman hit a three-run homer off Cal senior left-hander Kyle Porter in the fourth inning and it was the difference in the ballgame as Cal fell to Stanford, 4-1, Sunday at Sunken Diamond.

The series between the Bay Area rivals is now tied, 1-1, entering Monday’s 6 p.m. night game (shown on the Pac-12 Networks). The Golden Bears had defeated the Cardinal, 7-4 in 10 innings, Saturday.

Stanford improved to 18-18 overall and 7-10 in league play, while Cal dipped to 17-21 and 6-11 in conference.

The Bears produced its lone run in top of the first inning on an RBI single to right center field by Devon Rodriguez, scoring Aaron Knapp who had led-off the game with a single through the middle of the infield off of Stanford starter John Hochstatter, who threw a complete game (9.0 innings, five hits, one run, one walk, three strikeouts).

Stanford tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single off of Porter (4-5), who ended up going 7.0 innings with 10 hits, four runs, no walks and six strikeouts. The Cardinal then upped their lead to 4-1 on Edman’s three-run homer over the left field fence.
