OJAI, Calif. – Klara Fabikova was the last Golden Bear standing at the Pac-12 Championships, and the sophomore had the chance to bring home some hardware from the last day of the conference competition against an opponent she had beaten in their previous match. But California’s 85th-ranked and fifth-seeded Bear fell in the singles invitational final to USC’s third-seeded and 70th-ranked Giuliana Olmos, 6-1, 6-2, on Sunday at Libbey Park.
“Klara had a good week this week,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “It was great for her to reach the final. She had some tough matches along the way, and it’s always especially difficult playing a teammate like she did in the semifinal against Maegan Manasse. Credit to Giuliana today; she came out and played well. I know Klara’s disappointed in not playing as well as she wanted to today, but Klara got a lot out of this week.”
Fabikova boasts a 33-10 record – which includes a 6-3, 6-2 win over Olmos on April 4 – on the season.
“It was a good week for me,” Fabikova said. “Before coming down here my arm was hurting a little, so I was struggling with that. I was grateful to play the whole tournament, and it was great. Giuliana played differently than earlier this year; she had different tactics. I felt I wasn’t as mentally as strong as when it was a team match.
“But we did great as a team here. Even when I was on the court, a lot of us were playing at the same time, so you could hear each other. The atmosphere and support was great. We really showed up here well as a team.”
Cal next awaits the April 29 NCAA team tournament draw to find out its next opponent.
