BERKELEY – The California Golden Bears track & field team hosted the Brutus Hamilton Open on a rain-soaked Friday at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley. Cal fared very well in the men’s hammer throw, as redshirt Derek White took home the victory by posting a mark of 209-7, redshirt junior Scott Esparza was second with a throw of 195-10 and junior Isaac Dan posted a mark of 192-5 to finish fourth. Additionally, senior Maurice Valentine, Jr. set a new PR in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.69 to win the event. Other notable marks were sophomore Shelby Ashe’s strong performance in the women’s hammer that saw her finish third after a throw of 199-7 and senior Maggie Simpson, who recorded a mark of 171-5 to place ninth. Junior Laura O’Neill also impressed, setting a new PR in the 5000-meters with a time of 17:19.42.

White came up just shy of his PR in the hammer of 210-7, which was set at the Hornet Invitational in Sacramento on March 22 earlier this season. His winning throw on Friday came on his final attempt. Dan placed fourth with a mark slightly below his PR of 197-3, which was set at the Big Meet two weeks ago in Berkeley. On the women’s side, Ashe was a little over two feet shy of her best mark of 201-10, but was still very solid on Friday for the Bears with her throw of 199-7 on her fifth attempt.

On the track, Valentine, Jr. battled less than stellar conditions to eclipse his prior PR of 14.70 by one hundredth of a second to win the 110-meter hurdles. Freshman Evan Malone-White showed marked improvement in the men’s 800-meters with a 1:54.64 and fifth place finish, as he was over three seconds faster than his previous best time. Fellow freshman Marsalis Gibson bested his fastest time this season in the 400-meter hurdles with a 56.31, placing him sixth. O’Neill surpassed her previous best of 17:20.55 at the Brutus Hamilton Open to grab fifth place on Friday. Redshirt freshman Ashlyn Dadkhah improved on her best mark of the season in the women’s 1500-meters, posting a time today of 4:36.35 which bested her previous mark by nearly seven seconds.

Cal returns to action tomorrow with the Brutus Hamilton Challenge at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley. Field events begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT and running events start at 12:40 p.m. PT. The Challenge is a four-way scoring meet, and an opportunity for the Cal men’s team to maintain their Track & Field News number one dual meet ranking.
