BERKELEY - Anett Schutting posted a 6-3, 6-2 singles win over Kim Stubbe to lead No. 13 California to a 5-2 victory over No. 29 Arizona on Sunday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears improved their overall record to 12-4 (5-0 in the Pac-12) after completing the match, which had been rescheduled to Sunday due to rain the previous day. The Bears have won six consecutive dual matches.

Arizona now has a 14-3 (3-2 Pac-12) record.

The Bears captured the doubles point when the 60th-ranked team of Schutting and sophomore Lynn Chi dominated Arizona’s Lacey Smyth/Shayne Austin, 8-1, and then the pair of senior Kelly Chui and sophomore Klara Fabikova beat Akilah James/Susan Mc Rann, 8-4.

Chi and Schutting have compiled a 4-1 record after teaming up again for doubles recently in the spring – with all five matches taking place on court one – after they posted a 5-4 record in the fall. That one loss came two days ago at home against Arizona State.

“Even though we lost on Friday, I thought we played pretty well,” Schutting said. “We’ve had some really good wins, but I still think it’s too early to say how we’re doing until we play top-10 schools like USC, UCLA and Stanford. That’s going to really show how we work together.”

Fabikova then posted the first singles win on the day, shutting out Austin, 6-0, 6-0, on court five to give Cal a 2-0 overall lead. Manasse, ranked 78th in singles, followed with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Laura Oldham on court six to make the score 3-0.

Lauren Marker put the Wildcats on the scoreboard when she upset Cal junior and 14th-ranked Zsofi Susanyi, 6-2, 6-1, on court three to snap Susanyi’s eight-match winning streak. But Schutting, ranked 30th, won next over Stubbe to clinch the overall match with Cal leading 4-1. Schutting also ran her overall winning streak to six, with all six coming on court two.

“Today I was really focused, I was really excited, and I really wanted to win,” she said. “I knew that (Stubbe) had a pretty good match against a Stanford player (No. 39 Krista Hardebeck) on court two on Friday, but she lost on a super tiebreak. I knew she was a really good competitor, and I had to really earn the points and work the points. That’s what I did. I was able to use my variety of swings, and I played well today.”

Arizona collected another upset, when the 95th-ranked Smyth beat the 29th-ranked Starr, 6-4, 6-2, on court one.

Chi, ranked 43rd, wrapped up the contest by prevailing in the match tiebreaker and winning 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(3) over James on court four.

Cal continues Pac-12 action when it hosts USC on Friday, April 4, and UCLA on Saturday, April 5.
