WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – California freshman Jessica Howe was voted Pac-12 Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced today.
Against UC Davis in Cal’s dual meet home finale on Saturday, Howe stole the show with a pair of title-winning performances, including a career-best 39.350 all-around showing. The newcomer finished no lower than fifth in every single event, matched her career-high 9.85 on floor and was crowned beam champion with a 9.85 for her fourth beam title of the season. Her stellar night came despite competing on a broken toe, which she injured in practice just three weeks ago.
Howe’s award makes it the fourth time of a possible 11 weeks that a Cal gymnast has been voted the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week, the most of any school in the conference. Howe earned the award twice, and freshman Charlie Owens has also been Freshman of the Week twice.
See Howe and the rest of the Cal women’s gymnastics squad this weekend as the Golden Bears gear up to host the Pac-12 Championships Saturday, March 22, in Haas Pavilion. There will be two sessions, and all eight conference women’s gymnastics squads will perform. Purchase tickets online at CalBears.com or call (800) GO-BEARS.
