SEATTLE/ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The California Golden Bears finished off the Husky Indoor Classic at the University of Washington’s Dempsey Indoor Facility in Seattle and at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. in split squad action on Saturday. Junior Chioma Amaechi followed up her incredible record-setting night on Friday with her second event win of the meet, and set a new PR in the shot put with a mark of 52-11.50 (16.14m). In addition to Amaechi’s highlights, Redshirt senior Tom Blocker set a new school record for the 60-meters, with a time of 6.74 in the event final in Albuquerque. Fellow redshirt senior Dash Oliver set a new PR in the same event up in Seattle, posting a final time of 6.78 for the Bears. In Albuquerque, redshirt senior Hammed Suleman also set his indoor PR with a triple jump of 52-2.00 (15.90m), which should qualify him for the NCAA’s in mid-March.

"We had a number of NCAA qualifying marks with Suleman adding the triple jump to his long jump rankings," Director of track & field Tony Sandoval said on Saturday night. "Chioma was outstanding this weekend with her double win, as she has evolved into a national level thrower. Being a redshirt junior, as far as her future goes, the sky is the limit."

Blocker broke the school record in the 60-meters at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational, surpassing the previous record-holder Kellan Patterson, whose time of 6.77 set at the MPSF Championships in 2009 in Seattle. Oliver had quite the day in his own right, setting his new personal best at Dempsey Indoor with a 6.78. He finished second in Seattle just one hundredth of a second behind the winner, Abilene Christian’s Justin Farquarshon.

Amaechi won the shot put with the best throw of her career, 52-11.50 at the Husky Classic and was well over two and a half feet better than the second place finisher, Brittany Mann from the University of Oregon (50-2.75). Amaechi set a school record on Friday in the weight throw, with a mark of 71-4.25 (21.75m).

"Tom has been the most consistent sprinter for us thus far, with Khalfani Muhammad and Dash beginning to come around," Sandoval added. "We have a number of bubble athletes (Ristic, Payton) that need to improve their marks to get to the NCAA's. We'll take a week off and combine our squad for the MPSF in Seattle in two weeks."

The Golden Bears are off next week as they continue to prepare for the MPSF Championships in Seattle on Feb. 28-March 1 at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.
