BERKELEY – California junior Zsofi Susanyi earned the Pac-12 Player of the Week honor today, the conference announced on Tuesday, after leading the Golden Bears to the semifinals of the ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championships. One of the most experienced players on a talented Cal squad, Susanyi won all three of her singles matches at the indoor tournament in Charlottesville, Va.
This is Cal’s first Pac-12 Player of the Week honor of the season.
In the Bears’ tournament opener against No. 13 Clemson on Feb. 7, Susanyi beat Ani Miao, 6-2, 6-4, to clinch a 4-2, come-from-behind victory. In the 4-3 quarterfinal win the next day, the Bear defeated Georgia’s 33rd-ranked Lilly Kimbell, 6-0, 6-4, in a come-from-behind victory over the sixth-ranked Bulldogs. On Feb. 9, Susanyi’s 6-2, 7-5 win over Alyssa Smith temporarily tied the match against 10th-ranked Duke at 2-2, before the Bears eventually fell, 4-2. Cal returned home with a 5-1 record.
A Szeged, Hungary, product who earned singles All-America honors as a sophomore, Susanyi has compiled a 14-6 singles record during the 2013-14 season. She was ranked No. 16 in the Feb. 4 ITA singles poll.
The Bears return to action when they play UCLA on Feb. 21 and USC on Feb. 22 in Los Angeles.
