Bears Play in $100,000 Tiburon Challenger

Johnson Earns Wild-Card Entry to the Main Draw; Bears Win in Qualifying Singles

TIBURON, Calif. – Three California players won in the first round of qualifying singles on Saturday in an attempt to join teammate Campbell Johnson in the singles main draw of the $100,000 First Republic Bank Tiburon Challenger at the Tiburon Peninsula Club.

Johnson, a Golden Bear senior, earned wild-card entry into the 32-player main draw, which starts on Monday, Oct. 7, and ends on Sunday, Oct. 13. He opens the main draw against Canadian professional Peter Polansky.

Four qualifiers will claim berths in the main draw.

In the qualifying singles round of 32 on Saturday, Cal senior Ben McLachlan defeated Daniel Ho, 6-3, 6-3, freshman Filip Bergevi beat Brendan Curry, 7-5, 6-1, and junior Hasier Pastor topped Malcolm Harrison, 7-5, 6-4. But Cal junior Gregory Bayane fell to sixth-seeded Dennis Novikov, 6-4, 7-6(4).

Each of the three advancing Bears will take on a professional opponent in Sunday’s round of 16. Bergevi will face Novikov on center court at 10 a.m., McLachlan, who is ranked 27th in the ITA preseason poll, will play third-seeded Marcelo Arevalo at 10 a.m. on court one, and Pastor will meet eighth-seeded Greg Ouellette in the day’s third match on court one.
