TEMPE, Ariz. -
The No. 3/3 University of California softball team (0-1) opened its 2013 campaign with a loss to Kentucky (1-0) in nine innings Friday at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
The Wildcats tallied six hits off of senior pitcher Jolene Henderson, who pitched all nine innings to suffer the loss. Cal also tallied six hits off of Kentucky's Lauren Cumbess, but could not capitalize in scoring position for a total of 11 runners left on base.
The Bears struck first with two runs in the second inning, when freshman Jasmin Mejia marked her debut for the blue and gold with a single down the right field line in her very first trip to the box to bring sophomore Breana Kostreba and junior Jordan Wallace home.
Kentucky remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning with a single to second base by Ginny Caroll to bring in Kara Dill. The Wildcats scored again at the top of the sixth, sending the game into extra innings when California could not score. Kentucky sealed the win at the top of the ninth, sending Alice O'Brien home via a Cumbess single after O'Brien started the inning on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule.
