FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Megan Takacs and Paige Gasparino each scored three times, helping the California lacrosse team defeat Fairfield, 12-9, Wednesday afternoon at Fairfield. With the win, the Golden Bears have now won five of their last six matches.
Cal had five different goal scorers on the day. In addition to the hat tricks from Takacs and Gasparino, three Bears tallied two goals each - Gaby Christman, Melissa Humphrey and Amelia Burke. Alexa Rozelle also garnered two assists.
"This was a total team effort today," head coach Ginger Miles said. "When our offense is clicking, everybody gets involved. We took advantage of our opportunities. We needed everybody and we got a lot of people involved today. Our offense did a great job of finishing the opportunities that our defense created."
Now with 119 career goals, Takacs stands fourth on Cal's all-time career goals list, five shy of third and six shy of second.
Cal and Fairfield essentially traded goals in the first half. Burke got the scoring started with her first tally in the first five minutes of the contest. Gasparino scored two of her three goals in the first half, including one in the final four minutes of the half. At halftime, the match was tied at six.
"Early on we were trading goals back and forth, so at halftime we told the girls to take control of the game," Miles said. "We came out and scored the first few goals to get the advantage. I was proud of how we changed gears and shifted the momentum."
At the outset of the second half, the Bears scored four of the next five goals to take a 10-7 lead at the 16-minute mark. Cal maintained a three-goal lead for the rest of the game.
The Bears remain on the East Coast for a matchup with Yale on Friday, March 29, at 10 a.m. PT.
