Cal Quartet Named USTFCCCA All-Americans
BERKELEY --- Cal track and field sophomores Isabella Marten, Ashtyn Davis, Peter Simon and Ashley Anderson have each been named All-Americans by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) after competing at this year's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
"It is a great honor to be named an All-American and I'm proud of Isabella, Ashtyn, Peter and Ashley for earning this honor. Each of them did a great job for us this year, both on the field and in the classroom. We couldn't be happier," Director of Track and Field Tony Sandoval said of his student-athletes' selections.
Marten led the Golden Bear quartet by earning first team honors for the second time this season, her first in Berkeley. She secured this year's accolade after finishing seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 43-9.75 (13.35m). Marten's distance was a new personal best and improved her standing on Cal's all-time list in the event from fourth into a tie for third. Including a second team selection in the triple jump as a freshman at SMU, Marten will enter next season with three total All-American laurels to her credit.
Davis capitalized on his first trip to the NCAA Championships by picking up a second team All-American honor. He set a new personal best during the 110 meter hurdles prelims with a time of 13.73, moving up to 7th place on Cal's all-time list in the event. Davis' new benchmark time was only .02 seconds off the final qualifying time for the event finals.
Simon secured an honorable mention All-American distinction after ending the shot put in 19th place (60-10.50 / 18.55m). He has now been named an All-American in both of his NCAA championships appearances after being named to the second team during indoor season.
Despite struggling in the triple jump at nationals, Anderson joined Simon as an honorable mention choice by virtue of her participation in Eugene. With her first Championships and All-American honor in tow, the second year jumper will have positive momentum going into the 2017 campaign.
