Davis & Simon Open NCAAs For Bears
EUGENE, ORE. ---Sophomores Ashtyn Davis and Peter Simon kicked off the California track & field team's stay at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships Wednesday afternoon at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
The duo - part of the four-person Golden Bear group competing at nationals - posted solid numbers in their events but were unable to advance.
Davis set a new personal best during his 110 meter hurdles performance with a time of 13.73, shedding .03 seconds from his previous mark of 13.76 from April's Stanford Invitational. His mark also moved him to 7th place on Cal's all-time list in the event.
The performance put him on the precipice of making Thursday's final, missing eighth place by a mere .02 seconds.
"Ashlyn showed tremendous poise today to PR in spite of just missing the final," Director of Track & Field Tony Sandoval said of Davis. "He came into this meet ranked 29th and finished in the top ten, even leading the race until he clipped the last hurdle. For someone that didn't start running hurdles until senior year of high school, the sky is the limit."
Simon placed 19th in the finals of the shot put with a throw of 60-10.50 (18.55m). Including the end of indoor season, Simon has posted 10 straight throws high marks of 60 feet or better during his competitions.
"I am so proud of Peter for the type of season he was able to put together, both indoors and outdoors. He has been a rock of stability and consistency for us," Sandoval said of Simon.
After a pair of off days, fellow Cal competitors Isabella Marten and Ashley Anderson will wrap up Cal's season when they participate in the women's triple jump on Saturday, June 11. The event is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. PT start and can be followed via the NCAA Live Results link and the ESPN family of networks (ESPN3 / WatchESPN).
