Sophomore Four Head To NCAA Championships

BERKELEY --- A quartet of Golden Bears will bring the 2016 California Track & Field season to a close this week as they compete at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. beginning Wednesday, June 8.

The four sophomore student-athletes - Ashley Anderson, Ashtyn Davis, Isabella Marten and Peter Simon - will be taking part in a combined three events at historic Hayward Field in Eugene.

Marten will compete in the triple jump at NCAAs and will hope to draw on the two conference titles (MPSF indoor and Pac-12 outdoor) and First Team USTFCCCA Indoor All-American honor she earned this season. She set an indoor PR of 43-8 to win the Pac-12 Championships in May, exceeding her indoor high of 43-6 from February's while her indoor high (43-6) from February's Don Kirby Elite Indoor Invitational in Albuquerque.

Joining Marten in the triple jump competition, Anderson will be making the first championships appearance of her career after a pair of ninth place finishes at the Pac-12 Championships and the NCAA West Preliminary. Anderson's outdoor PR of 42-4.25 came in the West regional and secure her place in Eugene.

On the men's side, Simon will lead the way after making it to NCAAs in the shot put for the second time this year. He was named a Second Team USTFCCCA All-American and punched his ticket to nationals with a tenth place performance (61-3.50) at the West Prelims, just over two feet shy of his outdoor PR of 63-4 from the Payton Jordan Invitational in May. Simon has performed consistently in the shot put all year, even setting the Cal indoor record (62-7.75) at the MPSF Championships in February.

Rounding out Cal's participants is Davis, who will be making his first appearance at an NCAA championship event in the 110 meter hurdles. The squad leader in the event this season, Davis' ninth place time of 13.82 at the West Prelims was just .06 seconds off his PR pace of 13.76 from April's Stanford Invitational.

The schedule of events for the Bears in Eugene is as follows (subject to change):

  • Wednesday, 6/8: Men's 110 Meter Hurdles (Semis)
  • Wednesday, 6/8: Men's Shot Put (Finals)
  • Friday, 6/10: Men's 110 Meter Hurdles (Finals)
  • Saturday, 6/11: Women's Triple Jump (Finals)
