Four Bears Named Academic All-District
BERKELEY - Cal student-athletes continue to earn recognition for their work in the classroom as swimmers Rachael Acker, Rachel Bootsma and Ryan Murphy and men's water polo player Thomas Agramonte were named Thursday to the Academic All-District At-Large team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The quartet earned distinction in District VIII, which encompasses the West Coast and parts of the Mountain region as well as Hawai'i and Alaska. To earn a spot on the all-academic teams, recipients must be a starter or important reserve and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests while earning at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA and at-large selections come from all sports except football, volleyball, basketball, track & field, softball and soccer.
Acker adds the honor to an already incredible list of academic accolades and awards. She was recently named a finalist for the University Medal, which is presented annually to the most distinguished graduating senior on the UC Berkeley campus, and beginning this summer will begin a 10-month stay at the University of Rennes in France as a Fulbright Scholar.
A French major, Acker accumulated over a 3.95 GPA and was named the 2016 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's swimming and diving. The Palo Alto, Calif. native also earned two of Cal Athletics' top academic honors, the Neufeld Award and Anna Espenschade Award, and will sit on stage during Saturday's graduation ceremonies at Memorial Stadium.
Bootsma closed out her Cal career with a strong year in the pool as well as the classroom. A native of Eden Prairie, Minn., Bootsma won her third NCAA title in the 100-yard backstroke with a title-winning swim in Atlanta, Ga. She also accumulated a 3.41 GPA while majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies and graduates as one of Cal's most accomplished student-athletes over the past four years.
Murphy used his junior year to surpass the lofty heights he set during his first two years at Cal. A native of Ponte Vedra, Fla., he won both the 100 and 200 backstroke at the NCAA Championships for the third straight year, setting American, U.S. Open and NCAA record times in both events to earn CSCAA Co-Swimmer of the Year honors at the conclusion of the meet. The Pac-12 Swimmer of the Year maintained a 3.54 GPA as a member of the prestigious Haas School of Business undergraduate program while at the same time keeping his focus trained on the upcoming Rio Olympics.
Agramonte enjoyed a successful senior season with the Bears on several different levels, not the least of which was helping Cal return to the NCAA Championships and place third in his final year in Berkeley. The Half Moon Bay, Calif. native was named honorable mention All-America for his work as one of the nation's top defenders. He was also one of Cal's top athletes in the classroom, landing a spot on both the ACWPC and MPSF All-Academic teams for the fourth year in a row. With a 3.61 cumulative GPA, the American Studies major was named Cal Water Polo's Scholar-Athlete of the Year at the conclusion of the season.
Athletes who are named All-District are automatically nominated for Academic All-America honors, which will be determined later in May.
