Bears Celebrate 2015-16 Season at Annual Banquet
BERKELEY – Junior Farida Osman, who set a school record in the 50-yard freestyle and captured Pac-12 titles in the 50 free and 100 butterfly, received the Most Outstanding Swimmer Award for the 2015-16 season at the Cal women's swimming & diving team's annual banquet Sunday at the University Club.
In addition, other awards handed out went to:
Osman, who has already qualified to swim for Egypt at the 2016 Olympics, swam the 50 free in 21.32 to capture her second Pac-12 title in the event this past February. She also set a Pac-12 meet record in winning the 100 fly in 50.53. At the NCAA meet, Osman led off Cal's national championship 200 free relay, while she was second in the 50 free, took third in the 100 fly and placed seventh in the 100 free.
Thomas is also a 2016 Olympian after qualifying in the 100-meter fly at the Canadian trials earlier this spring. For the Bears, she was third in the 100-yard fly and second in the 100 fly at the Pac-12 Championships. At the NCAA meet, she was sixth in the 100 fly and eighth in the 200 fly. Garcia, meanwhile, led the Bears in both breaststroke events this past season. At the Pac-12 meet, she took fourth in the 100 breast and fifth in the 200 breast.
Naze was Cal's top swimmer in the 400 individual medley during the year with a PR time of 4:06.56, which came during a runner-up finish at Pac-12's. She tied for fifth in the 200 IM and was 11th in the 400 IM at the NCAA Championships. Bootsma won her third NCAA title in four years in the 100 back while also finishing seventh in the 100 fly and 12th in the 100 free this past March. Vredeveld was a member of the winning 200 free relay a both Pac-12's and NCAA's.
Kastler is Cal's school-record holder on both the 1-meter and 3-meter board, and Boushakra is No. 2 in school history on platform.
Acker was voted the 2016 Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's swimming & diving. Also a two-time Academic All-American, the French major on a pre-med track has a 3.96 GPA and will study in France next year on a Fulbright Scholarship.
As a team, the Bears finished third at the NCAA Championships to run their national-leading streak to eight consecutive years among the top three.
