Alex Mangels Signs With Tulsa Roughnecks FC
TULSA, Okla. – Former California goalkeeper Alex Mangels signed a contract with United Soccer League club Tulsa Roughnecks FC on Friday, the club announced. Mangels joins a long list of former Bears in the professional ranks, and joins five other Bears in USL; forward Stefano Bonomo (New York Red Bulls II), midfielder Seth Casiple (Portland Timbers II), forward Chris Cortez (Orange County Blues), midfielder Alec Sundly (Real Salt Lake Monarchs) and newly signed forward Andrew Wiedeman (FC Cincinnati).
“I'm very excited for this opportunity to begin my professional career in Tulsa,” Mangels said on Friday. “It will be fun to be a part of a young club that already has such a strong following. I'm grateful for all of the support I have received from everyone at Cal and can't wait to see our men's soccer program in action again later this fall.”
Mangels graduated with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies after appearing in 13 matches for the Bears in his final season in Berkeley. The Lafayette, California, native posted a goals-against-average of 1.45, and notched two clean sheets. During his time in Berkeley, Mangels made 26 total appearances, 21 of which were starts, and had a career record of 9-9-2 with four shutouts and a 1.74 GAA. He also appeared in five NCAA Tournament games, helping carry the Bears to the Elite 8 in 2013, as well as the Sweet 16 in 2014.
“Alex has been a fantastic goalkeeper at Cal during his five years,” Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. “His commitment and desire to develop his game has obviously paid off tremendously. We're really proud of Alex and look forward to seeing him play for Tulsa this season.”
Mangels was the only senior on a team that finished the 2015 season 9-6-2, and just missed out on a place in the NCAA Tournament. Cal is set to return five players that earned All-Pac-12 recognition this coming fall, including rising senior defender Nick Lima (first team All-Pac-12 and first team All-Far West Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America), rising senior leading scorer Christian Thierjung (first team All-Pac-12 and second team All-Far West Region by the NSCAA) and rising redshirt junior midfielder Jose Carrera-Garcia (second team All-Pac-12 and second team All-Far West Region by the NSCAA).
