Baker Takes Pac-12 Monthly Honor
Cal freshman Kathleen Baker has been named the Pac-12 women's swimmer of the month, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Baker had a spectacular month, setting two top-10 times nationally and winning 10 dual meet events. At the Austin Arena Pro Swim Series, Baker raced the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:52.15 (converted time from meters), which is the fifth-best mark in the country this season. She followed that up with a 51.81 (converted time from meters) in the 100 back, good for the sixth-best time nationally in 2015-16.
Baker played a huge role in the then-No. 7 Bears beating then-No. 9 Arizona in a dual meet at Spieker Aquatics Complex. She won three individual events – the 100 back, 200 back and 200 individual medley. She came back the following day to win the 500 free and also helped Cal win the 400 free relay in a victory over Arizona State.
In a narrow loss to No. 7 USC, Baker won the 500 free and 100 back while taking the 200 back and helping the No. 3 Bears win another relay in a win over No. 19 UCLA.
This is the 13th time a Cal women's swimmer has been named the Pac-12 Swimmer of the Month, tying for the most by any school since the award's inception.
