BERKELEY, Calif. – The California Golden Bears (9-6-2, 4-4-2 Pac-12) were represented by five players on All-Pac-12 teams, the conference announced on Tuesday. Forward Christian Thierjung and defender Nick Lima earned first team honors, while midfielder Jose Carrera-Garcia and forward Paul Salcedo were named to the second team and midfielder Trevor Haberkorn earned an honorable mention nod.
Thierjung, the team's leading goal scorer, posted nine goals (four of which were game-winners) and also added four assists in 17 appearances to tie for third in the Pac-12 in both goals and points (22). The Dove Canyon, California, native was named the NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) National Player of the Week on Oct. 27, as well as the Pac-12 Player of the Week after posting three goals and one assist in a pair of wins over San Diego State and UCLA, both 4-3 wins for the Bears. Thierjung was an All-Pac-12 honorable mention last season as well.
Lima was also an All-Pac-12 honorable mention last season, and this year was an anchor in the Bears' defense, while also providing a ton of offensive punch from his outside back position. He started all 17 of Cal's matches, posted two goals and four assists out of the back and was instrumental in Cal's four shutouts during the 2015 season. Lima posted a match-winner at Oregon State on Nov. 1, blasting a shot from distance past the diving Beavers' goalkeeper, the first game-winning goal of his career.
Carrera-Garcia, had a fantastic campaign for the Golden Bears in central midfield, finishing the year with career bests in goals (five) and assists (10, which ranked second in the Pac-12) in 17 appearances, all starts. Carrera-Garcia tallied one game-winning goal, when he scored via a beautiful chip over the UCLA goalkeeper in a 4-3 win over the Bruins on Oct. 25 in Berkeley. The Ontario, California, native was named Pac-12 Player of the Week on Sept. 22, following his spectacular performances in wins over Davidson and San Francisco, where he had a hand in five Cal goals with a goal and four assists.
Salcedo, a pre-season All-Pac-12 pick, lived up to his billing during his sophomore campaign. He started all 17 matches for the Bears, scoring four goals and four assists and ranked third on the team in points, with 12. Salcedo wreaked havoc on opposing defenses throughout the season, utilizing his size and strength to hold the ball well to help jumpstart the California attack.
Haberkorn, a junior who shifted positions this year, found a home at defensive midfield, scoring one goal and doing a lot of the dirty work in front of Cal's back four. This is Haberkorn's first Pac-12 honor, and his match-opening goal in the fourth minute against UCLA from about 35-yards out set the tone in a crucial 4-3 win for the Bears. Haberkorn's tireless work defensively helped the Golden Bears preserve four shutouts.
The Bears concluded the season winning four of their last five matches and just missed out on an at-large bid for the NCAA Tournament. Finishing the campaign at 9-6-2, the Bears look to build off of this season for what appears to be a very bright 2016, where they return all but one, redshirt senior goalkeeper Alex Mangels.
