AJGA All-American Jang Signs With Cal Golf
BERKELEY – The California women's golf team has announced the signing of Jiyoon Jang to a National Letter of Intent for the 2016-17 season, becoming the second to announce her intent to join the Golden Bears next season.
Jang comes to Cal from Rancho Mirage, Calif., where she attends Palm Desert High School. She was recently named a 2015 American Junior Golf Association Rolex All-America Honorable Mention, one of just 48 girls across the world to be honored for the award that is given to the top junior golfers following the conclusion of 127 events across the globe in a calendar year.
Coached by Tony Manzoni and Kurt Ney, Jang, ranked 43rd in the country, placed fourth at this year's U.S. Girls' Junior Championship after advancing to the round of 32 last year. She was 15th at the 2014 U.S. Women's Amateur with a 72-71.
Jang won her first AJGA title this year when she won the AJGA Yang Foundation Junior championship, and twice competed at the Golfweek West Coast Junior Invitational, finishing as the champion in 2013 and runner-up in 2014. She took sixth at the 2013 Silver Belle Championship. Jang is the reigning CIF-Southern Section champion, and she also holds the single-round record in the Desert Valley League with a 5-under 30 on the front nine at the South Course at Indian Canyons Golf Resort in Palm Springs.
“I chose Berkeley because it's a very prestigious and challenging university, both academically and athletically,” Jang said. “I also fell in love with the accepting atmosphere of the campus as well as the unique and diverse aspects of the surrounding area. I'm very happy to finally be a Golden Bear, and so grateful to have the opportunity to join such an amazing coaching staff and team.”
