BEAR NECESSITIES: CAL'S TOP STORYLINES, STREAKS & TRENDS
SCHONEWISE SIZZLES
Senior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise was an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention last season, and she is making a case for more postseason honors this year. Schonewise ranks fifth in the Pac-12 with a .372 hitting percentage, and has been especially unstoppable lately. In her past 10 matches, Schonewise is hitting .427 while averaging 3.77 kills per set. Her 3.02 kill average overall is second among Pac-12 middle blockers, and she also has the most attacks among the conference's top-10 players in hitting percentage. Schonewise is also fourth on Cal's career hitting percentage list at .321.
KERR SCALES CAL'S DIGS CHART
Junior libero Maddy Kerr has spent this season climbing Cal's all-time digs list. She recorded her 1,000th career dig against Army on Sept. 11, broke into the program's top-10 all-time against Oregon State on Oct. 11 and now is up to fifth on Cal's digs list with 1,270 in her career. Kerr, the daughter of Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr, already holds two of Cal's top-10 all-time single-season dig marks. Her 430 digs as a freshman in 2013 was the ninth-best total ever by a Golden Bear, and she bettered that in 2014 with 462 digs, the eighth-best mark at Cal. Kerr currently ranks sixth in the Pac-12 at 4.20 digs per set.
LLOYD NAMED TO ALL-CENTURY TEAM
Former Cal star Carli Lloyd was named to the Pac-12 All-Century Team last month. The conference is celebrating its 100th year of existence and released a 16-member team that was voted on by current coaches, former playrers and members of the media. Lloyd, one of four setters named to the team, was the 2010 AVCA National Player of the Year and a three-time AVCA All-American. She led the Bears to the NCAA Final Four as a freshman in 2007 and then guided Cal to the NCAA championship match in 2010.
SABBI SHINES
Junior Sabrina Blackwell has emerged as one of the Bears' top defensive specialists this year. She registered a career-high 17 digs against Oregon State last month and ranks second on the team at 2.21 digs per set. Blackwell has reached double-digits in digs five times this season.
CAL ON THE AIR
Sunday's match at No. 3 Washington will air on the Pac-12 Network, marking the 11th time this season the Bears have appeared on television. Kate Scott and Mike Dodd will have the call. Overall, Cal will appear on the Pac-12 Network 13 times this season.
THE NEW HAAS PAVILION
Cal's volleyball team is the first program on campus to play in the renovated Haas Pavilion, a project that included the installation of a center hung scoreboard. New features also include an improved public address system and lighting system. The $10 million project was made possible through a generous gift from the Evelyn & Walter Haas, Jr. fund.
