Post-Game Quotes: Cal vs Sac State

Lindsay Gottlieb Opening Statement
“I'm glad you want these two (Reshanda Gray and Brittany Boyd) up here. Their stats were “okay”. Thanks so much for coming, I know it's an early game. I think it's really cool for (California) women's basketball to engage the community. I was telling the girls before the game that, while I'm focused on our shooting percentages and our defense and transitions and things like that, the most important thing today is to inspire the kids in our community and inspire them to be whatever they want to be through what we have, talented athletes and students and strong people. I think that was the best part of the day. The game was a little crazy—credit to Sacramento State because they really controlled the style of play. They made us play like them. They gave us problems with the five-out and the pressure and some of the things they wanted to do. But, I think we have the two best players in the country to face that type of defense in Boyd and Gray. I thought obviously they did a ton of great things, especially on the offensive end, I thought our players attacked the pressure really well. I think we walked away feeling good about our team, especially offensively, and a hunger to get better, especially to guard the ball. It was a good one for us, and we'll get our bodies rested and head to Kansas.”

On her shooting and rebouding
RESHANDA GRAY: “I just try to take my time with shots, focus, and move at my pace and not allow other peoples to make me shoot. As far as rebounding, just trying to get my rebounds up, which we have been doing a good job, so I have been trying to do more rebound drills to get my stats up.”

On the pace of the game
BRITTANY BOYD: "I think that we need to control the pace, and that is my job to work on controlling the pace and control how we play, on defense and offense—on defense by stopping the ball. Sacramento State is a good team, a good shooting team, especially 3-pointers, and a lot of credit to them."

On “School Haas Rock”
BOYD: "It was an honor to play in front of all those kids. One thing Coach talked about before the game was inspiring them to reach higher education. Maybe our basketball will help them get to that goal. I think it was a high-energy game, and kids need high energy to stay interested. Moving at a fast pace kept them entertained, but we want to play a game where we control the pace more, make it our pace, fast or slow."

GRAY: "I love kids. It was an honor just to play for them. My foundation, No Gray Areas, where I want to give back to the kids and offer them support and show them - that was hope. I thought it was really fun and I was honored to play for them."

On her triple-double
BOYD: “I definitely didn't know that I was close to it. I was more worried about stopping them from shooting threes, and stopping the ball and picking up the energy on our team. I didn't know until I got into the locker room. I'm not worried about my stats, I just want our team to pick up the win.”

On the pace of the teams they've played recently
GOTTLIEB: "I think San Jose State and Sacramento State both play unusaual tempo, it's sort of like what we have faced in the past against Oregon under Westhead. We want to bring this defense to Kansas and Long Beach because I think we can make lots of fast-break shots and we want to keep this up. I think we will have less extra possessions than today because we will be pressed on every drive, but I didn't call one offense today, because they were trapped all the time. They (Boyd and Gray) got to their spots and made plays. We want to play fast and control the tempo and make shots and play defense.”
