Cal To Tangle with Texas Friday at Spieker

Two of the marquee teams in the history of collegiate women's swimming & diving face off at Spieker Aquatics Complex when California hosts Texas in a dual meet starting at 1 p.m. Friday.

Together, the programs have combined for 10 team national championships and over 130 individual or relay national titles. At last year's NCAA meet, Cal finished third - the sixth year in a row the Bears have placed among the top three - while Texas took home ninth place. Cal's won its NCAA crowns in 2009, 2011 and 2012, with Texas claiming championships from 1980-81, 1984-88 and 1990-91.

Overall, UT leads the series with the Bears, 8-3, but Cal claimed the last match-up, 172-128, two years ago in Berkeley.

Friday's meet marks the second of three consecutive home events for Cal. The Bears defeated Oregon State, 156-97, last Thursday and host Wisconsin in a dual with the men's team on Friday, Nov. 7.

• CAL SPREADS THE WEALTH IN OSU WIN
Ten different Golden Bears picked up individual event victories, resulting in a 156-97 victory over Oregon State, in Cal's home opener Oct. 23. Among the winners were three freshmen, who were making their Spieker Aquatics Complex debuts - Jasmine Mau claimed the 100 back (55.67), Noemie Thomas prevailed in the 100 fly (54.09) and Maija Roses took the 200 breast (2:20.39). Swimming in the 100 breast, sophomore Marina Garcia set a team season best with a time of 1:03.05.

• GOLDEN BEAR IN THE HOUSE
Long-time Golden Bear fans may recognize third-year Texas head coach Carol Capitani. As a collegian, Capitani (nee Felton) suited up for Cal from 1988-91 and helped the Bears to four consecutive top-5 finishes at the NCAA Championships. Today marks her second return trip to Berkeley leading the Longhorns after bringing her squad to California in the fall of 2012.
