Individual Wins from 10 Bears Lift Cal past OSU
BERKELEY, Calif. – In a 156-97 dual-meet victory over Oregon State, the California women's swim team showcased its deep roster as 10 different Golden Bears claimed individual titles on Friday afternoon.
“I am really proud of the girls,” said associate head coach Kristen Cunnane. “Having 10 different event winners shows a lot of versatility and the good, healthy competitiveness of the team.”
Four freshmen made their Spieker Aquatics debut and three claimed individual event victories.
“It was amazing,” said first-year swimmer Jasmine Mau. “I was really excited and really pumped to be at home with my teammates and swim my first dual meet.”
Cal got off the blocks quickly as two Golden Bear quartets notched the top two spots in the 200 medley relay to open the meet. The team of Mau, Marina Garcia, Farida Osman and Camille Cheng came in first with a mark of 1:41.92. The foursome of Elizabeth Pelton, Maija Roses, Kelly Naze and Kaylin Bing claimed second in 1:43.39.
Oregon State junior Sammy Harrison tallied the only two OSU individual titles starting with a win in the 1000 freestyle (9:50.25). Cal freshman Cierra Runge also finished under the 10-minute mark in the event with a second-place finish in 9:53.91. Harrison later claimed the win in the 500 free with a 4:51.25 time.
Led by sophomore Missy Franklin, the Bears collected 16 team points after claiming the top three spots in the 200 free. Franklin clocked in at 1:48.24 to take first, while Caroline Piehl (1:50.12) and Rachael Acker (1:51.69) finished second and third, respectively.
Mau produced a victory in the 100 backstroke (55.67), edging Franklin who took second in 55.78 just moments after her 200 free swim.
Cal continued its steak of victories in the 100 breaststroke (Garcia, 1:03. 05), 200 fly (Rachel Bootsma, 2:01.14), 200 backstroke (Melanie Klaren, 1:58.54) and 50 free (Kaylin Bing, 23.21).
Osman held off a colony of Beavers to win the 100 free with a dominating mark of 51.23. Freshman Maija Roses came up with an impressive win in the 200 breast, touching at 2:20.39.
Noemie Thomas and Celina Li capped off the individual events with wins. Thomas, a freshman who came out on top n the 100 fly, clocked in at 54.09, while Li dominated the 400 IM with a time of 4:19.67.
Cal finished the afternoon strong as the quartet of Piehl, Mau, Runge and anchor Bing touched first at 1:34.78 in the 200 free relay.
The Golden Bears return to the water when they face off against Texas at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Friday, Oct. 31.
