GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA – California swimming will be extremely well represented at this week’s Pan Pacific Championships as a total of 13 Golden Bears are on the USA National Team that will be competing against squads from Australia, Canada, Japan and South Africa, Aug. 21-24 in Gold Coast, Australia. Included in the Cal group are 11 athletes (six on the U.S. men’s squad, five on the U.S. women’s squad), plus head USA women’s coach Teri McKeever and assistant USA men’s coach Yuri Suguiyama.

Athletes with Cal connections on McKeever’s Team USA contingent will be juniors Rachel Bootsma and Elizabeth Pelton, sophomore Missy Franklin, alumna Caitlin Leverenz, and incoming freshman Cierra Runge.

Overall, Cal women captured four events during the U.S. championships in Irvine, Calif. Franklin was named the women’s high-point award winner as she captured three events – the 100 and 200-meter backstroke and the 100-meter freestyle – and was runner-up in the 200 free.

In addition to Franklin’s three titles, Bootsma won the 50 back, Runge was runner-up in both the 400 and 800 free, and Pelton was third in the 100 back. Leverenz had a third-place finish in the 200-meter IM as well.

On the men’s side, three former Cal standouts were national champs. Tom Shields won both the 100 and 200 fly, while Nathan Adrian captured the 100 free and 33-year-old Anthony Ervin won the 50 free.

Joining Shields, Adrian and Ervin will be Bear sophomore Ryan Murphy, and Cal juniors Josh Prenot and Jacob Pebley. Murphy won two silver medals at the national championships, placing second in both the 100 and 200-meter backstroke. Prenot placed third in the 400 IM and the 200 breast at the national championships, and Pebley had a fourth-place finish in the 200 back and was fifth in the 100 back.
