EUGENE, ORE. - Seniors Devon Rodriguez and Vince Bruno had a pair of hits, and freshman right-hander Daulton Jefferies did not give up a hit until the fifth inning, but California still lost at No. 16 Oregon, 5-1, Thursday night at PK Park.

With the loss, the Golden Bears dropped to 24-27 overall and 11-17 in the Pac-12. The Ducks improved to 42-16 and 18-10 in league play.

Cal actually out-hit the Ducks, 6-3, with junior designated hitter Brenden Farney and junior third baseman Chris Paul (double in the ninth inning) also recording hits. Cal pitchers Jefferies (four) and junior reliever Dylan Nelson (six) also combined for 10 strikeouts.

The Bears scored their lone run in the top of the ninth inning when Paul doubled and later scored on Bruno's two-out RBI single off Oregon starter Tommy Thorpe (10-4, 9.0 innings, six hits, one run, one walk, eight strikeouts).

After not giving up a hit through the first four innings, Jefferies gave up four runs to the Ducks in the fifth inning. Oregon scored on fielder's choice RBI by Nick Catalano, on a throwing error by Cal shortstop Derek Campbell, an RBI single by Mark Karaviotis and an RBI single by Tyler Baumgartner.

The Ducks added a run in the seventh inning when A.J. Balta stoled third base and scored on catcher Mike Reuvekamp's throwing error.

The Bears will next play Oregon in the second game of the three-game series Friday, May 23 at 7 p.m. at PK Park. The game is televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
