Schmitt Returns To Cal As Associate Head Coach

Former Defensive Specialist Will Help Lead Sand Volleyball Program

BERKELEY – Former Cal volleyball player Meagan Schmitt, who played on the Bears’ only Final Four berths in school history in 2007 and 2010, has been hired as an Associate Head Coach for Cal’s sand volleyball program, head coach Rich Feller announced.

Schmitt was one of the Bears’ top defensive specialists throughout her career at Cal, where she was a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection. Immediately after her graduation from Cal, she was hired as a volunteer assistant coach at Loyola Marymount. The following year when Loyola Marymount started its sand volleyball program, Schmitt became the top assistant. She also was a full-time assistant coach for the Lions’ indoor program the past two years.

“I’m really excited to be bringing a Bear back to Cal,” Feller said. “Meagan epitomized a coach’s player while she was here playing and I know she’s transferred that same work ethic, focus and desire into her coaching career. She knows the lay of the land here and has a good handle on how to recruit athletes to this university. She has a great passion for the University of California. Having a combination of all those things makes it a really good match.”

Schmitt helped guide Loyola Marymount’s sand volleyball program to a No. 8 ranking in the final AVCA national poll this season. The Lions’ top pair of Betsi Metter and Litara Keil earned AVCA All-American honors after advancing to the Final Four of the AVCA Pairs National Championship. It marked the second year in a row Schmitt helped guide Loyola Marymount’s top doubles team to the national championship tournament.

Schmitt also is a AAA-rated player by the California Beach Volleyball Association.

“It’s been a goal of mine ever since I was an athlete at Cal to return as a coach and be part of something new and exciting,” Schmitt said. “Cal sand volleyball has a bright future and I look forward to being a part of its growth.”

As associate head coach, Schmitt will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program during the fall indoor season. During the competitive spring season, Feller will join Schmitt and direct the program along with volunteer assistant coach Nicole Walthall.
