BERKELEY, Calif. – The Golden Bears capitalized on three passed balls to score two runs in a loss to No. 8 Washington, 4-3, at Levine-Fricke Field Thursday afternoon. The Huskies improve to 31-13 overall and 11-9 in Pac-12 play while the Bears move to 23-27 and 4-16 in the conference.

Junior Breana Kostreba finished 2-for-4 with one RBI, to lead the Bears, and senior LaRisa Jones also notched two hits in a 2-for-3 performance. Junior Cheyenne Cordes was 1-for-2 with two walks.

Kaitlin Inglesby (12-4) picked up the win for Washington and Bryana Walker earned the save. Inglesby allowed seven hits and three walks while striking out three, while Walker tossed three strikeouts with a hit and two walks. Freshman Katie Sutherland-Finch moves to 6-5 with the loss after allowing five hits and three walks in three innings with one strikeout. Freshman Stephanie Trzcinski pitched the final four innings for the Bears, also allowing five hits while walking three and striking out two.

Cal surged to a two-run lead at the bottom of the first starting with an infield bloop single by freshman Kylie Reed and then a walk by junior Danielle Henderson. A passed ball allowed both runners to advance to scoring position before Kostreba singled down the right line to score Reed. Henderson headed home on another passed ball.

Washington's Ali Aguilar singled to lead off the top of the second before a double by Whitney Jones and an outfield single by Marki Creger-Zier helped plate her, putting Washington on the board with one run.

The top of the third brought an unusual two runs. With two runners on, Jones homered to center field but was called out on the play after passing her second baserunner Aguilar. However, both Aguilar and pinch runner Rylleigh Zbaraschuk received credit for runs scored and Washington came away with a 3-2 lead.

The Huskies increased their lead to 4-2 at the top of the sixth. Creger-Zier tabbed an infield single to start the inning off, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt before Hooch Fagaly brought her home on an RBI single to center field.

Another passed ball cut into Washington's lead at the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Jasmin Mejia drew a walk and was replaced at first by senior Ashley Decker. A single by Jones moved Decker over to second, and Cordes drew a walk to load the bases. Decker made her way home quickly when the ball got away from Bridget Raftery.

Cal and Washington return to Levine-Fricke Field for the second game of the series Friday at 3:30 p.m. All games in the series against the Huskies will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
