BERKELEY – Having demonstrated a high level of achievement in their Academic Progress Rate scores, four University of California, Berkeley, intercollegiate athletic programs – men’s and women’s tennis, women’s gymnastics and women’s volleyball – have earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for their performances in the classroom.

Men’s tennis received the honor for the fourth year in a row, while women’s tennis has been acknowledged for three consecutive years. Women’s gymnastics (twice) and volleyball (three times) have also earned multiple awards from the NCAA since the APR program was initiated. All four teams posted multiyear APR scores of 1,000 – the highest possible – for the four-year current period that spans from the 2008-09 academic year through 2012-13.

Among Pac-12 schools, only Stanford had more than four teams recognized by the NCAA in the data released Wednesday. Overall, Cal has had 17 teams earn special distinction over the past five years, and 10 different programs have been publically recognized since the NCAA began acknowledging teams in 2008-09.

In addition to their academic work, each of the four squads honored this year has performed well in their athletic environments. In the fall, volleyball reached the NCAA Tournament for the 12th straight season, and women’s gymnastics had its highest conference finish ever (third) and finished 16th in the final rankings during the winter season. Both tennis programs have secured invitations to their respective NCAA postseason fields and begin competition this weekend.

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear APR. This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced May 14.
