SALT LAKE CITY, Utah -- Junior Danielle Henderson gave the Golden Bears an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Utah scored five unanswered runs to defeat the Golden Bears 5-2 Saturday in Salt Lake City. Cal falls to 23-36 overall and 4-15 in Pac-12 play.
Henderson finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two runs batted in. Junior Cheyenne Cordes added another two hits in four at bats, and freshman Kylie Reed and sophomore Vanessa Alvarez also had hits to bring Cal’s total to six.
Freshman Stephanie Trzcinski (8-13) suffered the loss after giving up one walk, two hits and three runs in 2.1 innings as the starter. Fellow freshman Katie Sutherland-Finch tossed the remainder of the game, allowing two walks, two runs and seven hits and striking out two. Sammy Cordova (10-8) earned the victory for the Utes.
At the top of the first, Reed, batting second in the order, got on base with a double off a fly ball that landed fairly into shallow left field. Next, Henderson stepped up to the plate and sent a shot over the center field fence, giving the Bears an early 2-0 lead.
The Utes overtook the Bears at the bottom of the third starting with a double by Shelby Pacheco and a single to the outfield by Chalese Hadley to score her. Back-to-back walks by Hannah Flippen and Kate Dickman loaded the bases before Anissa Urtez singled to left center and scored both Hadley and Flippen for a 3-2 Utah lead.
Back-to-back singles put two Utes on base at the bottom of the sixth before pinch hitter Kendal Bergman doubled to right center to plate one run. A single by Pacheco plated another and Utah's lead increased to 5-2.
Cal wraps up Pac-12 play beginning Thursday as the Bears play host to Washington. First pitch on Thursday is set for 3 p.m., and the entire series will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
