PULLMAN, Wash. – Sixth-ranked California began its trek to the Pacific Northwest with a 4-1 victory over No. 47 Washington State on Saturday at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. Senior Alice Duranteau clinched the match with her court-six singles win
Cal improved its Pac-12 leading record to 8-0 and 15-4 overall. The Cougars’ record stood at 16-9 (2-6 Pac-12) after losing to the Bears. WSU lost to Stanford later in the day to fall to 16-10 (2-7 Pac-12).
The Bears opened with a win in doubles, as the 37th-ranked duo of freshmen Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr beat Maria Biryukova/Olga Musilovich, 8-2. The Cal tandem of senior Kelly Chui and sophomore Klara Fabikova wrapped up the doubles point with an 8-3 triumph over Charlotte Koning/Dajana Ognjenovic on court three. The court-one match between Cal’s 71st-ranked team of Anett Schutting/Lynn Chi and the Cougars’ Elizaveta Luzina/Lize Leenknecht went unfinished.
Leading 1-0 after doubles, the 100th-ranked Manasse quickly made the score 2-0 after beating Koning, 6-0, 6-0, on court five. Cal was rolling at 3-0 after the 35th-ranked Chi topped Leenknecht, 6-2, 6-4, on court three.
With Cal on the verge of securing the overall match, the 94th-ranked Fabikova stumbled on court four, falling to Musilovich, 6-2, 6-3. But Duranteau followed with her 6-3, 6-3 win over Ognjenovic to hand Cal its 4-1 win.
The Bears played the Cougars outdoors Saturday, with the temperature only 43 degrees at 9 a.m. when the match began.
“I’m pleased with the win today,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “We played outside in chilly and a little bit windy conditions in Pullman. The girls handled it very well. We came out aggressively in the doubles. We were points from winning the third doubles match as well.
“Coming out in the singles, we had great play from Maegan today as well as from all the other players. But it was great to see Alice clinch the match as a senior. For her to clinch an important conference match for us was very exciting. We’re happy with the win today, and we’re getting ready for the Ducks tomorrow in Eugene.”
The Bears play at Oregon (7-12, 1-7 Pac-12) at noon on Sunday in their penultimate conference dual match.
