SACRAMENTO – Cal’s sand volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday.
The Bears defeated the host Hornets, 3-2. Cal registered victories at No. 2, 3 and 5 to secure the victory. Seniors Adrienne Gehan and Joan Caloiaro defeated Sac State’s Sloan Lovett and Lauren Aikels, 21-18, 21-10 at No. 2. At No. 3, sophomore Nikki Gombar and freshman Maddy Kerr got by the Hornets’ Madeline Cannon and Morgan Stanley, 11-21, 21-17, 15-12. The Bears’ No. 5 team of freshmen Emily Lunt and Caroline Olson beat Courtney Dietrich and Kendall LaVine, 21-18, 21-16.
Cal’s sophomore tandem of Lara Vukasovic and Sarah Cole, playing in the No. 1 spot for the first time this season, dropped a hard-fought three-set match to Sac State’s Kayla Beal and Katie Aprile, 21,18, 20-22, 15-6.
In their second match of the tournament, the Bears also dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 9 Saint Mary’s. Cal’s No. 4 team of sophomore Katarina Milosavljevic and freshman Sabrina Blackwell played a thriller against the Gaels’ Rachel Gillcrist and Mileva Popovic, falling 17-21, 21-17, 16-14. Vukasovic and Cole, playing back at the No. 2 spot, also went three sets before falling to Kristina Graven and Natalie Loos, 23-15, 21-8, 15-9.
The Bears (2-4) return home next Saturday, April 12 for a tri-meet against Sac State and Cal Poly.
