BERKELEY - Sophomore right fielder Brian Celsi was 3-for-5 with three RBI, freshman right-hander Lucas Erceg picked up his first collegiate win and senior Trevor Hildenberger earned his seventh save of the season as Cal swept Utah with a 8-7 win Sunday (March 30) at Evans Diamond.
The Golden Bears improved to 14-12 overall and evened their record to 3-3 in the Pac-12 with the three wins over the Utes (9-17, 0-9). Cal had won 4-2 Friday and 5-4 Saturday.
"This was a big series win for us," said Cal coach David Esquer. "In this conference nothing can be taken for granted and we are thankful we were able to take all three games. Brian Celsi did a nice job of getting the big hit for us all weekend long. That is the type of production you have to have to win games. It was a huge bonus for us."
Celsi had an RBI double in the third inning and tied the game for the Bears with a two-run single in the sixth inning. Freshman left fielder Aaron Knapp ended up getting the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Other top hitters for the Bears were senior designated hitter Devon Rodriguez, who was 2-for-5 with a two-run single in the third inning, and sophomore catcher Mitchell Kranson finished with a pair of hits.
On the mound, Erceg picked up the win in relief, throwing 3.2 innings with four hits, two unearned runs, two walks and three strikeouts. Hildenberger completed his seventh save by pitching the ninth inning with no hits and a strikeout.
The Bears will next face Bay Area rival Stanford in a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 1 at 7 p.m. at Evans Diamond in a game shown on the Pac-12 Networks. Cal will then travel to Washington State, April 4-6. for a three-game conference series in the Palouse.
