BERKELEY - Freshman Robbie Tenerowicz hit his first collegiate home run in the second inning to give Cal a 1-0 lead, but defending National Champ UCLA answered with a run in the third and two runs in the seventh to capture a 3-1 victory over the Golden Bears Saturday night (March 15) at Evans Diamond.

With the win, the Bruins improved to 11-7 (2-0) and Cal drops to 10-7 (0-2). UCLA won a close game on Friday night as well (3-2).

The Bruins were led by the pitching of junior left-hander Grant Watson (3-1), who pitched 8.0 innings with only two hits, one run, one walk and four strikeouts. Besides Tenerowicz's homer, the only other hit he yielded was a lead-off double by Bear junior third baseman Chris Paul in the eighth inning. David Berg earned his fifth save of the season by pitching a hitless ninth inning.

The Bears' senior left-hander Kyle Porter had pitched a solid game in the loss (2-1, 6.1 innings, five hits, three runs, three walks, three strikeouts), giving up an RBI single to Christoph Bono in the third inning before giving up a two-run homer to Kevin Williams in the seventh inning.

Cal junior reliever Dylan Nelson was able to keep the game close by getting out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth inning by striking out the final two batters.

The Bears will host the Bruins in the final game of the three-game series Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. at Evans Diamond in a game televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
