LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Cal (314-302-287 – 903) moved up three spots by tying for the best round of the day to finish eighth at the prestigious Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters that concluded Sunday with the third and final round at the par-72, 7,374-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club.

The defending champion Golden Bears climbed back into the middle of the final results by being 27 strokes better Sunday than their opening-round 314 Friday that was the team’s highest score in a count-four format since 2004. Cal had better team scores during each of the final two rounds than winner and host UNLV (289-303-294 – 886).

“At times we played some great golf today,” head coach Steve Desimone said. “Overall, it was a pretty good performance.

Cal did have its string of 39 consecutive top-five finishes snapped that dated back to the entire 2011-12 season.

Keelan Kilpatrick (74-74-74 – 222, +6) was Cal’s top finisher after shooting his third consecutive round of two-over par 74 on Sunday. He began the final round tied for eighth.

Kilpatrick was in Cal’s lineup for only the third time since the 2011-12 campaign but for the second consecutive event and is coming off the top finish of his career when he tied for eighth at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in his previous event. He also played well at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in 2012 when he was tied for fourth heading into the final round and ended up tied for 15th.

“It was important for us to have a good round today,” Kilpatrick said. “We’ve had a rough week and with a quick turnaround before our next event it was good to boost our confidence. Personally, I had another solid round. It was nothing special but I managed to keep myself out of trouble. It’s nice to finish near the top in such a strong field.”

Joël Stalter (79-76-70 – 225, +9) was next for the Bears after moving up 19 spots into a tie for 21st place.

Brandon Hagy (82-75-69 – 226, +10) was the Bears biggest mover for the second straight day after his three-under par 69 that tied for the best of the 54-hole tournament. Hagy jumped up 22 spots to finish in a tie for 26th after he had moved up 18 spots the day. A career-worst opening-round 82had left him tied for 66th after the first 18 holes.

“I played really well today,” Hagy said. “I hit the ball great and made a few more putts. It was nice to bounce back the way I did after a tough start. It was also nice to see the team play a great round.”

Michael Weaver (79-83-74 – 236, +20) inched up three spots into a tie for 67th after a two-over par 74 that was his best round of the event, while Pace Johnson (83-77-80 – 240, +24) finished tied for 72nd.

Stanford’s Patrick Rodgers (74-69-74 – 217,  +1) was the tournament’s individual medalist.

The tournament featured each of the nation’s top six teams and an entire 15-team field that was in the top 50.

Cal returns to action Mar. 14-16 at the NIT Invitational hosted by Arizona.
