TARZANA, Calif. – Sophomore Hannah Suh earned her third career top-10 finish after carding a 54-hole score of 218 (+2) at the Bruin Wave Invitational. The Golden Bears finished seventh as a team with a 301-303-309=913 (+49) at the tournament that was held at the El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana.

USC won the team title by 13 strokes with a 296-277-290=863 (-1), and Pepperdine (876, +12) and UCLA (886, +22) rounded out the top three.

Suh (71-72-75) matched her season-best 54-hole score with another solid round Tuesday to finish the tournament. After carding a 71 and 72 in Monday’s opening two rounds, Suh was on her way to another 72 and a top five finish after sitting even through the first 16 holes that were highlighted by consecutive birdies on the 10th, 11th and 12th. However, a double-bogey on the par-5 17th knocked her to 2-over and a bogey on the 18th moved the sophomore to a 75 and eighth place finish.

“Hannah was super solid this week,” California head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “Her rounds were all right at par. I know she was disappointed in the last two holes and that’s just a learning experience. She just has to keep getting in those positions.”

Freshman Lucia Gutierrez improved 17 spots Tuesday to finish 26th individually after carding a 74 in the final round. Gutierrez improved her score with each round at the tournament and scored a 229 (+13) after jumping from a 79 to a 76 to a 74.

Gutierrez sat 3-over at the turn before hitting birdies on the 11th and 16th alongside a par-4 bogey on the 15th to finish with a 74 Tuesday.

Senior Nicola Rössler had what would have been an extremely consistent day derailed by just three holes as she finished with a 74-76-82=232 (+16). Rössler’s score was greatly impacted by three par-4’s spread out across the course: the 2nd, 9th and 18th holes. Her day started rough with a triple-bogey on the 2nd before a double-bogey on the 9th put her at 7-over at the turn.

The senior remained calm for her next eight holes before a double-bogey on the 18th pushed her score to 82. She finished tied for 33rd individually.

Carly Childs placed 45th with a 78-79-78=235 (+19), and Jo Ee Kok placed 61st on the individual leaderboard at 78-81-82=241 (+25) to round out the Golden Bear effort.

“March is a work month,” McDaniel said. “We want to work on everything and get better every day. We want to improve by the time we get to April. We’ll keep checking in with each player individually and make it happen every day. We know we have our work cut out for us.”

California next competes in two weeks when the team travels to the BYU Entrada Classic in St. George, Utah.
