Cal Falls to No. 18 Texas, 5-0

BERKELEY - Cal junior left-hander Michael Theofanopoulos shutdown No. 18 Texas through five innings before the Longhorns scored three runs in the sixth on the way to a 5-0 win over the Golden Bears Sunday (Feb. 16) in the final game of a four-game series at Evans Diamond.

Senior left fielder Vince Bruno was Cal's top hitter on the day, going 2-for-4 off of Texas starter Nathan Thornhill (8.0 innings, four hits, no runs, three walks, three strikeouts). Theofanopoulos ended up throwing 5.0 innings with three hits, two runs, two walks and two strikeouts.

The Longhorns' Zane Gurwitz opened the sixth inning with a home run off of Theofanopoulos, and then Texas scored on Mark Payton's RBI triple and a sacrifice fly by C.J. Hinojosa. In the seventh inning, Cal reliever Trevor Hildenberger gave up back-to-back RBI singles to Brooks Marlow and Payton.

With the loss, Cal goes to 2-2 on the season after winning 7-0 on Friday night and 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Bears lost the nightcap on Saturday, 6-2, before falling 5-0 Sunday. Cal had an impressive crowd of 1,231 for Sunday's final contest versus the Longhorns.

The Bears next travel to the Tiger Classic in Auburn, Ala., opening against East Tennessee State at 2 p.m. (Eastern Time) on Friday, Feb. 21.
