BERKELEY – Cal’s Olympic connection of Roser Tarrago and Dora Antal combined for 13 goals in two matches as the No 4 Cal women’s water polo team defeated No. 11 Long Beach State 15-7 and No. 16 Santa Clara 17-6 on Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Tarrago, a member of Spain’s 2012 Olympic Team that won the Silver Medal in London, scored six goals during the victory over the 49ers. It’s the third time a Cal player has scored six goals in a match this season, which is tied for third on the Bears’ all-time single-game scoring list. Antal has scored six goals on two other occasions this season.
Antal, a 2012 Olympian for Hungary, scored three goals in each match Saturday. She entered the day leading the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation with 40 goals and a 4.00 goals-per-match average.
Senior Ashley Young added three goals against Santa Clara and had four total on the day while Anna Illes and Stephanie Mutafyan each combined for three in the two contests. Tarrago added one against the Broncos to finish with seven on the day.
Long Beach St. (5-5) stayed close until midway through the third quarter when Emily Matheson scored to cut the Bears’ lead to 9-6. But Cal (11-1) went on to score six goals in a row, including two each from Tarrago and Mutafyan to take control.
Cal held a 9-0 halftime lead over Santa Clara (3-7), getting goals from eight different players. Nine of the Bears’ first 10 goals were scored by different players.
