SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- A balanced California offense tallied 10 hits against South Dakota as the No. 23/25 Bears cruised past the Coyotes 10-3 Friday afternoon at the Campbell/Cartier Classic in San Diego.

Freshman Kylie Reed and junior Cheyenne Cordes both went 3-for-4, with Reed scoring two runs and Cordes scoring three of her own plus one RBI. Senior Victoria Jones added two RBI in a 2-for-4 performance.

Rookie pitcher Katie Sutherland-Finch (2-0) earned the win, pitching the Bears through six innings while allowing only four hits and one earned run. Sutherland-Finch walked three while striking out six. Fellow freshman Stephanie Trzcinski closed the game, allowing three hits and striking out two and allowing one run. South Dakota's Madison Frain (2-1) was charged the loss, allowing nine hits and four earned runs without tossing a single strikeout.

Cal got into a bit of trouble early as South Dakota’s first at-bat started with a single, followed by two walks to load the bases. Another walk forced a runner in to make the score 1-0, and the Coyotes added another run with a sacrifice fly.

Cal quickly equalized, starting with a leadoff single by Reed. A ground out by senior LaRisa Jones moved Reed to second before Cordes singled to left field to open it up for Reed to reach third. The pair managed to each steal a base and Reed came home to cut South Dakota’s lead 2-1. Junior Danielle Henderson was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, and a ground rule double by V. Jones brought Cordes to the dish to tie it up 2-2.

South Dakota went three up, three down at the top of the second, paving the way for the Bears to take a commanding 6-2 lead at the bottom of the inning. Sophomore Jasmin Mejia drew a leadoff walk before a single by Reed moved her to second. Another base hit by Cordes sent Reed to second and Mejia home, 3-2. Henderson drew a walk to load the bases, and all three baserunners capitalized on a dropped fly ball by the South Dakota right fielder during V. Jones’ at-bat to score.

Cordes added Cal’s final run at the bottom of the fourth starting with a double to right center, advancing on a ground out before coming home on a single.

The Coyotes cut the score to 7-3 in a last-inning effort by Christine Broders. She led the inning off with a single before making a trip around the bases on two singles from her teammates.

The Bears will continue tournament play against San Diego State Friday at 7 p.m.
