Bears Improve to 3-0 on the Season After the Win at Channing

BERKELEY – Eighth-ranked California remained perfect on the season and on the day as the Golden Bears handed San Francisco its first loss of the season, 7-0, on Friday afternoon at the Channing Tennis Courts. Sophomore Klara Fabikova’s singles win over Andrea Ka clinched the victory for the Bears, who improved their record to 3-0 after the nonconference affair. The Dons now have a 4-1 record.

The USF match marked Cal’s first complete contest at Channing this season, due to the ongoing renovations at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

“It went well,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said of the victory. “It was interesting because we played out all the matches today; going back to what is a little more of a traditional format.”

The action was similar to Cal’s last two matches at Hellman, at which the Bears played under the ITA’s experimental format in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. On Friday, the Bears and Dons played their doubles matches to six and did not warm up against each other prior to doubles and singles, which are some of the changes that Cal will play under in the upcoming ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championships.

“We decided as coaches to play all the matches out, which I’m much more a fan of, so that all the girls had the opportunity to close out a game, close out a set, close out a match,” Augustus said. “I think that’s an important part of tennis, and that’s why I was excited to see where we were at as a team today. Everyone got it done on all the courts.”

The Cal duo of senior Anett Schutting and freshman Maegan Manasse drew first blood with a doubles 6-3 victory over Thyra Taune and Sofia Holmberg on court one. Fabikova and sophomore Lynn Chi secured the doubles point with their 6-3 win over Ka and Marina Nikolic on court two. On court three, the Bear pair of junior Cecilia Estlander and senior Kelly Chui added a 6-1 triumph over USF’s Genevieve McCloskey and Milica Hadzi-Tanovic.

Senior Alice Duranteau put together a strong performance on court five, beating Hadzi-Tanovic, 6-1, 6-1, to give Cal a 2-0 lead in the overall match. Schutting, ranked No. 26 in singles, followed with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Taune on court one that pushed the lead to 3-0.

“She’s feeling good, she’s looking good going into next week,” Augustus said of Schutting. “Anett’s looking good in singles and doubles. She’s serving well. I think she’s hitting her forehand quite well, which is one of her strengths. I was really pleased with Anett. She kind of led the team, and she controlled the flow from her match in singles and doubles today.”

On court three, Fabikova trailed in both sets, including 4-3 in the first and 3-2 in the second. But she rebounded to beat Ka in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to wrap up Cal’s overall win at 4-0.

Chui contributed a 6-3, 6-1 win over McCloskey on court six to make the score 5-0. The 95th-ranked Chi, who struggled early and trailed Holmberg 4-1 to in the first set, bounced back to beat the Don, 7-5, 6-3. Manasse – ranked 31st in singles – also won 7-5, 6-3 on court four, as she defeated Nikolic to give Cal its 7-0 win. The freshman likewise trailed in the first set, at 5-4, but Manasse won the last three games to take the set.

Cal next competes in Charlottesville, Va., from Feb. 7-10 in the ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championships.
