BERKELEY – Lynn Chi’s singles win clinched eighth-ranked California’s 4-0 victory over No. 66 Santa Clara on the first day of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears, playing in their first dual match of the season, will play No. 43 Washington on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the right to advance to the ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championships.

The Huskies beat No. 50 UNLV in a tight, 4-3, match on Friday afternoon. Cal (1-0) and UW (3-0) will play in the 1 p.m. championship match on Saturday at Hellman, after UNLV (0-1) takes on Santa Clara (0-1) at 10 a.m. in a consolation match.

On Friday, the team of senior Anett Schutting and freshman Maegan Manasse clinched the doubles point for Cal, as the duo beat Katie Le and Daniella Silva, 6-0, on court one. Earlier, Chi paired with fellow sophomore Klara Fabikova to defeat the Broncos’ Nikki Wolny and Stephanie Skaras, 6-1, on court three.

In singles, Cal went ahead 2-0 when Fabikova made quick work of Skaras, 6-1, 6-0, on court five. The 31st-ranked Manasse followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Delphine Rouvillois on court four to give Cal a 3-0 lead. On court three, the 95th-ranked Chi wrapped up the match when she dispatched Silva, 6-1, 7-6(2).

“We’re excited to get our first team dual match under our belt,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “Happy to see us get the first win of the season for the Bears.”

The teams are playing in an experimental format in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend. They play all sets in singles and doubles to six games, with regular scoring and tiebreakers at 6-all. However, when a singles match splits sets, a match tiebreaker is played in lieu of a third set. All the matches are played under the "clinch-clinch" format and with no warm-up against opponents.

The format can speed up a match, as shown by the Cal/Santa Clara contest, which took just a little over two hours to complete.

“It was a little on the shorter side of what a typical college match would be,” Augustus said. “It was the first day of this experiment. We have a second day of it tomorrow, and we’ll see how it goes.”

The UW/UNLV match went roughly four and a half hours, as the teams played all nine of their matches. The Huskies finally clinched its victory in singles when Grace Ysidora held off the Rebels’ Aleksandra Josifoska, 7-6(11), 2-6, 7-6(10), on court two, to set up tomorrow’s battle between the two Pac-12 schools.

During the 2013 regular season, Cal beat Washington, 7-0, in Berkeley.
