BERKELEY - In keeping with the University’s new branding identity, the California baseball team will be sporting new uniforms when the Golden Bears open the 2014 campaign hosting the Texas Longhorns on Friday, February 14 at Evans Diamond. Click here to buy tickets.
The new uniforms arrive on the heels of the visual identity the California Athletic Department launched in April of 2013, including a set of graphics, colors and imagery that pays homage to Cal’s historic past while presenting a contemporary look with an eye toward the future. Just like the other new uniforms Cal’s teams have unveiled in 2013, Cal baseball will have modernized uniforms that portray a coherent theme throughout all sports, including consistent use of Cal’s colors and marks.
“We are looking forward to showcasing our uniforms this season,” said head coach David Esquer, entering his 15th year directing the Bears. “The new hats and jerseys provide a classic look that our players like. We enjoy being a part of the University’s new branding.”
Cal’s baseball tops will feature the new California word mark on the chest and the iconic Cal Script, the Athletic Department’s primary logo, on the sleeve. The team’s hats feature the ‘C’ mark that is derived from the ‘C’ in the California word mark and official athletic font that was developed for Cal Athletics. The back of the hat will also feature the Cal Script. The new Golden Bear mascot mark will be featured on team performance gear. Click here to view pictures of one of the new set of uniforms. The new Cal baseball hat will be available to buy in the coming weeks. Until then, fans can purchase gear with the new identity today online through the Cal Bears Shop, the official outfitter of the California Golden Bears, or on campus at the ASUC Student Store located on Bancroft Way. Most other outlets that offer Golden Bear merchandise will also have products available.
Cal features 26 returners from last year’s squad and an impressive freshman class. The Bears have five members from the 2011 College World Series squad – seniors Devon Rodriguez, Kyle Porter, Vince Bruno and Michael Theofanopoulos, and junior Derek Campbell. Campbell was the starting second baseman for the Bears as a freshman at the CWS, Theofanopoulos is a talented left-handed pitcher/utility player, Porter was a freshman All-American left-hander in 2011 and picked up Cal’s CWS victory over Texas A&M in Omaha, Bruno was an honorable mention all-conference selection in 2011 and Rodriguez was the Most Outstanding Player of the 2011 Houston Regional after knocking in the game-winning hit in Cal’s dramatic come-from-behind victory over Baylor to advance the Bears to the 2011 Super Regionals in Santa Clara.
The schedule for the 2014 Cal baseball team includes hosting the season-opening four-game series against Texas, Feb. 14-16 at Evans Diamond.
